JUST FLEW IN FROM ORLANDO and boy are my arms tired...

What can i say..The PGA show was a terrific success!!!
Pictured above is Claude Harmon who was indicted into
the Teachers Hall of Fame. The photo taken circa 1954
is a stiking resemblance to Peeheed. Ofcourse Peeheed
and myself were invited to the gala affair and we both
threw back plenty of "comp" cocktails. Our entire exhibitor
group was in attendance as we celebrated the life of a great
contributor to golf. Our exhibit was among the most visited
along with Q-Link. A snake oil necklace that claims to be better
than viagra! Peeheed and I both walked away with a necklace and
i can tell you it works! More later on the show but safe to say
we sold a hell of alot of video teaching systems and had the plesure
of meeting the Harmon's, Chuck Cook, Jim McClain, and many other very
formidable pga teaching pros all very pleased with our product..MW

Jacks Last Putt at the British

In 1972 my parents took me to Muirfield to watch the British Open. I was 11 years old and had hit my 1st golf shot a month earlier on a soccer pitch beside our home . Its hard to describe the excitement i felt as i walked through the gates of The Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers and witnessed my 1st of many 'Opens'.
As i made my way past the clubhouse and the grandstands by the 18th green with my father in tow i suddenly saw this great big blond haired man walking to the practise putting green, little did i know he had already won the Masters and the US Open earlier in the year and was marching confidently towads history and the illusive grand slam.
I followed him all four rounds but alas he was pipped by a stroke by Lee Trevino and the impossible slam would stay safe once again.
But since that moment 33 1/2 years ago when he almost tripped over me , he has been an incredible role model and someone i have looked upto so often, the way he handled himself on and off the course throughout his career is something others should attempt to immulate, as it is awful to watch the behavior of some very high paid athletes.
So the moment the above picture was taken i can assure you i was shedding a tear or two.
I promise you Jack Nicklaus will be missed by this fan...

WHATS THIS GOT TO DO WITH GOLF ???????

PREDICTION - Jim Furyk 2006 Player of the Year

"It is not a game of perfect" Bob Rotella once said
and that can certainly be seen here from Jim Furyk , the precious swing plane millions of golfers spend countless hours and unknown amounts of money trying to perfect is clearly not that important to this great player. What is important is the IMPACT ZONE which creates the trajectory.
Lee Trevino never had a lesson nor saw his swing on video but he hit thousands maybe millions of balls focusing only on trajectory and he became one of golfs greatest ball stikers.

Jim Furyk could be close to this catagory also including the fact he is a fearsome competitor with a great shortgame all adds up in my opinion to him having a wonderful season and being the best in the game at the end of it........

LUCAS & PHIL....

Our great friend Jay Glover pictured above runs a great little business down here in Palm Springs called Stand By Golf. If you're planning a trip to our area and want to play some really great courses at affordable prices give
him a call but keep your wife/girlfriend away from him. (760) 331-2065 While he may look like Howdy Doody it's really more like Howdydoher, anyway give him a try.

Today at the HOPE my two top picks Lucas Glover and Phil Mickelson both shot 66 but I must say Phil got his on what has always been the toughest in the HOPE rotation and my personal favorite course. LaQuinta CC. There won't be many rounds shot lower than that of today in our view. The course is beautiful, tight, and old like many of the members there. On a sad note the clubhouse litterally broke in half this past earthquake season and is closed and scheduled for a $40mln renovation. Good luck to all the fine members at LaQuinta. The town itself is famous only for the 30 DUI's the
cops wright there each and every nite.

It was a picture perfect day here in the valley with 76 degree temps and little wind to dampen the fun. The biggest question on the minds of most fans was..."Where in the hell is the Goodyear blimp! There I said it and it's about time we take this issue seriously. Peeheed just showed up for a little smallball so i'm out..MW

Bob Hope holes in one at 90 years old

Back in december 1993 i worked at the fabled Canyon South g.c. in Palm Springs , this happened to be Bob Hopes favourite course , a place he frequented often simply because it was near his house and no one would bother him whilst there . Each time he arrived he would pull into the parking lot , get in a cart with his driver (the kind that starts the car and stops at red lights) and off they'd go for a quick 9 holes.

On this particular afternoon Bob would ace the 8th hole , a 150 yarder using a driver (the callaway kind) he nailed the tee shot then watched as it skipped across the pond , up and over a bank onto the green and finally into the cup. After playing he excitedly shared his joy with the assistant starter the legendary" jack n' coke Jeff" then trundled accross the street to the Canyon C.C. for his usual 2 brandy alexanders.
"Jack n' coke Jeff" felt compelled to call the Desert Sun newspaper and share the moment , and they graciously put an article on the front page of their sports section to Honor a great moment for Palm Springs most famous golfer........

HOPE SPRINGS ENTERNAL...

Phil Mickelson shown above is the odds on favorite to win his third hope classic. It seems he wins every other year here. Unlike Hawaii he will be playing left handed this time out and if his putter is hot he should win again.

My personal longshots include Sean O'hairy, Michelle Allan, Lucas Glover (no relation
to Jay Glover), and my favorite Swinger Jeff Maggot. Ofcourse anyone can win this pitch and putt but don't be surprised to see a winner from this group of five.

PEEHEED WRIGHT ON THE MONEY...

Once again peeheed strikes gold with his analysis of the swing problems that have ended Duval's career in golf. The ole reverse pivot and way too much hip turn leaves
David out there where you just can't square up the clubface. All one has to do is check out his stats to see how wild he's become. We're going out to the range to see him hit balls and hopefully this time he'll listen..I liked him better when he was fat! MW

DUVALS DIFFERENT SWINGS

The swing frames at the top were filmed at Doral in 2004 and below was 2000.
You can click on either to enlarge it. The 2004 pictures clearly show the shaft going much further back at the end of the backswing than the frames from 2000 so the swing had for sure changed and i believe got more complicated and when ones confidence suddenly disappears the consistency becomes much harder. The answer to me elimenate the reverse pivot on his newer swing and he will be back to where he was in 2000. Although he did shoot 63 last week in Hawaii so maybe he has..??

poor swing meets great player....is there HOPE?

The great wall street guru Warren Buffett has often quipped, "when a great company meets poor management the company's reputation usually loses". the same can be said for a poor golf swing teaming up with a great player and this appears to be exactly what happened to David Duval!

BUT! on a crisp sunday morning in 1999 the trashman had invited Peeheed and myself to the hope tent for some breakfast and the final round of this desert classic. Peeheed had already knocked back 4 bloody mary's and i had hit on the food and beverage manager (female) when the monitor flashed that Duval had birdied four out of the first 5 holes holes.

Peeheed needed some fresh air so we headed out to check out the action. Duval had just won the Mercedes shooting a sizzling 26 under but was far back after opening with 70-71-64-70. at -13 he was hardly in contention. still it was the "Hope" and anything is possible on these courses plus Duval was on top of his game and would go
on to post 17 top 25's out of 21 tournaments played in '99 and would win 4 times including the Player's considered by many as a 5th major.

Steve pate was on fire and would shoot a terrific 61 on this sunday. surely enough
to win until Duval hit that magic 5 iron to 20 feet on the final hole and made eagle
to be the first ever to shoot 59 on sunday and win the damn tournament. it was a thrill to watch.

Pate would spend the next 5 years at Q-school and Duval would win only two more tournaments including his only major "the open". What the hell happened? at the end of 1999 Duval was "king of the world" but it wouldn't last. in my humble opinion his poor swing fundamentals finally won out even though he was a great player and number 1 for some time during this stretch.

Tomorrow the "HOPE CLASSIC" begins play and the birds will fly. there is one new course slated to be the home of the hope classic which was built just a few miles east of one of the largest windmill farms in the world. during practice rounds they
had winds up to 50MPH so maybe the scoring will prove difficult on 1 of the 4 tracks.

On the 18th hole of the palmer course there lies a stone in the ground where Duval hit his final approach shot in 1999. i've had the opportunity to play this course a few times since history was made and i still get gooesey bumps as i hit my 3 wood in
to the green from that very spot. i've never even hit the green from that point but
it's always fun to try. we'll be out there on Sunday and hopefully so will David. it's not like he's Ian Baker Flinch or anything. good luck David. maybe Peeheed will be so kind as to analize the Duval swing for us. i'm out..MW

DAVID TOMS SWING

The great thing we see in Toms swing is how well he stays behind the ball , his move truly is simple , the less moving parts the better..

Singh's putting woes

It's frightening to think how many more wins Vijay Singh would have if he were even slightly better than average with the putter. Sometimes watching him putt is like watching Shaquille O'Neal shoot a free throw. Singh's 50 career wins worldwide, including one here last year over Ernie Els, is a testament to just how good the rest of his game is. And if it wasn't for a missed 9-footer for birdie on the first playoff hole at the Mercedes, we would likely be talking about win No. 51 -- yesterday i turned on the TV late in the final round just as they showed VJ miss one from 18 inches on his final hole , yet he still managed to finish 5th, is he destined to become the next Ben Hogan, a superlative ball striker who eventually has great difficulty even drawing the putter back..

correction.......

a spokeman for the wie family has informed this blogger that michelle just had her first menstrural period and there is no truth to her being pg. our apologies go out to the friends and family of michelle and her boyfriend ernie els.

also, phil mickelson has quit the pga tour due in part to an ealier reported story that he had entered the wie sony open under a ficticious name wearing a disquise which frankly fooled peeheed and myself for about an hour. MW

breaking news from mr wright...

this just in... Phil Mickelson disquised in black hornrimmed glasses, false teeth and dyed black hair playing wright handed shot 63 today but was disqualified when officials discovered he had used the name of shane bertsch to enter the wie sony open. phil said he needed the money after losing to peeheed in a million dollar matchplay event on tuesday at cathedral canyon country club. the golf world was shocked to hear of this after phil and tiger had both decided not to play in the event. in an unrelated story michelle wie was said to be near death after a suicide attempt apparently after a self endouched abortion attempt. there was no comment from the apparent boyfriend/father to be ernie els. more later on this breaking news..MW

ALMOST A GOOD TAKEAWAY

Mr.Wright demonstarting good clubhead position on his takeaway, which is certainly a key to good mechanics , however as his arms , hands and club move away from the ball his chest or sternum does not move in unison with them therefore a slight disconnection occurs.
The cure simply is focusing on the sternum and butt of club starting back together.

I had to wie wie...

I guess that's why she spent so much time in the sandbox, eh? She hit it left most of the day and even putted poorly on her home course. What else can one say? Maybe David Lettergetbetter can enlighten us...More on the great opportunist later but for now it's safe to say woman have a tour of their own and they need to wake up and realize that they just don't have the physical or emotional skills to compete with the men. Golf is his life

Palm Springs Life

desert golfer

Each afternoon around 3:30 Peeheed and I venture out for a few relaxing holes of smallball. It's been a great January so far with temps
in the mid 70's to as high as 85 degrees. In comparison my former hometown has had like 25 straight days of RAIN! Anyhow these late
afternoon rounds have proven an effective practice regimen. Just think of it. Water left, out of bounds wright and no mulligan! Even with
nothing on the line it's a bit of pressure. The key ofcourse is a good setup, aim, and a swing that's in balance. Can this be taught? absolutely!
While a proper setup is really the easiest part of the entire process we find that most students have no idea of what a good setup feels like.
When shopping for an instructor it makes sense to ask first about the correct setup. If you get a peeheed stare then move on and find another instructor.

This week the Wie Sony Open, next week the Hope Classic with skys of Blue. Wei will choke and miss the cut yet again and she should. She's 16 friggin years old and not ready for primetime. I look for her to hit it left alot and you know how Hogan feels about that. This will be the result of trying to hit it too hard. Remember Michelle....good setup and aim and then swing on balance...LOL. Here in the desert the courses will once again lose the tournament to a volley of birds and eagles. The weather is just plain perfect with little wind to date and warm temps.
Hell! Even David Duval will go lower than Wie in my view. Shanks for the memories, MW

PGA Tour Finalizes TV Rights for 2007

Commissioner Tim Finchem announced on Wednesday that the PGA TOUR reached an agreement with CBS, NBC and The Golf Channel for the television broadcasts of TOUR events from 2007 through 2012. Story

WIE 24 HOURS AWAY

Michelle under the watchful eye of her father

The latest chapter in Michelle Wie vs. the men tees off Thursday in the first round of the PGA Tour's Sony Open, this time with the major difference that Wie will be playing for cash as well as pride.
Wie will be making her third start in the Sony tournament, where she came within a shot of making the cut in 2004. Now 16 and a pro, many believe this is the year Wie breaks through to make a cut in the men's event after failing in PGA Tour, Nationwide and Japanese Tour men's events in the past.
So the question now is, after watching Wie miss cuts for the last two years, how excited should we be that she's making another try this week?
As with everything with Wie, it's difficult to figure out how to judge her performances in men's events because of her age. If Wie had missed the cut in consecutive Sony Opens and the John Deere Classic at, say, age 25, it would be easy to dismiss her attempts and ignore any future play against the men.
But at 16 and likely to improve in the coming years, Wie's near-misses at the 2004 Sony and the 2005 John Deere seem to show she is destined to make a cut on the men's tour, probably sooner rather than later.
Age vs. genderBut that brings up another tough question to answer. If fans can see a future where Wie is making the cut in tour events at 20, how important is it if she misses another cut in the Sony this week?
Critics of Wie, or of the concept of women playing against men in general, will latch onto another missed cut this week as a sign that Wie, Annika Sorenstam or any woman shouldn't be getting exemptions into men's events. At some point, a string of missed cuts begins to lose the interest of fans and tournament directors.
But one made cut, just one weekend appearance in a men's event, will change the landscape of the men's tour, if not for other women then at least for Wie. If she makes a tour cut at age 16, then tournament directors will be falling over themselves trying to get her to take an exemption to their men's event. She'll likely accept her share of those invitations, and the taboo of a woman in men's event will be shattered forever.
Will that be different if she misses the cut at 16 and makes the cut at 17? Or at 18? Or even 19? Not really. Wie's tender age may be important when it comes to play on the LPGA. Against the men, it is Wie's gender, not her age, that will get people excited. Making a men's cut at 16 would just be a bonus.

michelle wie

many, including our top rated swing coach jeff dalmer have predicted that wie will forego her pro
and college career and opt to have children in the coming year/years. i frankly tend to agree......
she's been playing golf long enough and needs to start a family and soon. one can just imagine how disappointed her family wll be in lite of the fact that she has yet to win an lpga event or for
that matter made a cut on the men's tour but that's the way it is in our view. mw

Michelle Wie

In 2 days Michelle Wie makes her debut as pro in a pga tour event, namely the Hawaii Open.
As can be seen from the accompanying swing sequence her move is remarkably advanced and continues to improve all the time.

The Power Move

This is a perfect example of the power move in golf. On the left is John Cook on the right the great Tiger Woods their hands are in about the same place before impact yet cook (a short hitter on tour) has almost completely released the club thus reducing speed in the impact area.
Tiger on the other hand maintains a fully cocked position almost the same as he was at the top of his backswing, as he comes into the hitting zone this produces tremendous speed.

So how is this position achieved ??? Well go chop a tree down and chop almost at ground level. Film it if you want and then review it. The results will surprise you as your unconscious
mind produces the power needed in order chop down the tree and your position would then resemble tigers but in golf your conscious mind is trying to hit the ball from the top of the backswing thus in most cases the club is released too early.

By the way you probably will need to acquire some kind of permission from your local council before taking down trees.

2006 Mercedes Championships
Garcia Hopes Putting Leads to Big YearBy Associated Press - January 05, 2006
KAPALUA, Hawaii -- Sergio Garcia stuck two white tees into the practice green at Kapalua and started his drill, one stroke after another with the putter sliding between the two pegs. Garcia noticed watching videotape that when the pressure was on, he rarely hit the putts squarely on the blade. That might explain his frustration over 2005, when he felt as though he hit the ball well enough to win just about every week, yet had only one trophy—the Booz Allen Classic—to show for it. “One win was the least I could get the way I played last year,” he said.

Segio Garcia ranked 196th on the PGA Tour in putting in 2005.The short game is the only thing stopping him from a big year. Garcia hopes to change that starting Thursday, when he joins 27 others in a winners-only field at the Mercedes Championships that officially starts the PGA Tour season. It’s the first of 48 events on the PGA Tour schedule. He’s one of only three players from the top 10 in the world ranking at Kapalua, largely because Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and Retief Goosen decided to stay home and wait a few weeks before making their ‘06 debut. And the 25-year-old Spaniard certainly has the experience to win on the Plantation Course, having won four years ago by making a 10-foot birdie putt in a playoff to beat David Toms. That image of Garcia rolling a putt that disappears into the cup seems like a rarity now. He hit the ball so well in 2005 that he led the tour in greens hit in regulation at 71.8 percent. Length has never been a problem, and Garcia averaged more than 300 yards to rank 10th. But the statistic that stands out is putting -- 196th out of 202 players. Garcia is sensitive when talking about the flat stick, because he realizes how much it cost him last year. Ask him about what needs to improve in his game, and he broadly mentions his short game. But he later said that his chipping is vastly improved, and no longer a problem. “The putting,” he said, “is the one that has been, you know, giving me a headache.” A putting tip from Adam Scott carried him to victory at Congressional the week before the U.S. Open, but nothing is more glaring than his collapse at the Wachovia Championship, where Garcia tied a PGA Tour record by blowing a six-shot lead in the final round. The only other player to do that was Greg Norman at the 1996 Masters.
Tiger's Caddie Wins Race in New ZealandBy Associated Press - January 04, 2006
KAPALUA, Hawaii -- At least one person could not have been more thrilled that Tiger Woods skipped the Mercedes Championships -- his caddie. Steve Williams, a race car driver in New Zealand when he's not toting the bag for the world's No. 1 player, won the New Zealand Super Saloon Championship this week with a dramatic rally that would have made his boss proud. "It's the No. 1 event in racing in New Zealand," Williams said from his home in Auckland. "As I told Tiger, now I know how he feels when he wins the Masters." Williams, who races stock cars on dirt tracks, had not been able to compete in the Super Saloon because it's the same week as the season-opening Mercedes Championships on the PGA Tour. But when Woods decided not to play at Kapalua because he wanted a long break, Williams was free to drive. It was held Monday and Tuesday at Baypark in Tauranga, and Williams thought he was done after a collision sent his car airborne and on top of another car during the first of two qualifying heats. "That realistically ended my chances," he said. "I started the second heat in the back of the grid and had to finish first or second to get into the finals. I made it past the second car in the last 50 feet. The best driving of my life." After two more qualifying runs Tuesday for starting positions, Williams was on the inside of the front row. He took the lead on the third of 25 laps and led the rest of the way. "I wouldn't have been able to compete if Tiger played in the Mercedes," Williams said. "To get in the way I did, then have the best drive of my speedway career, it was awesome." Of course, no story involving Williams would be complete without an incident with photographers. He said the top three finishers gather in the infield to spray champagne and do interviews, but Williams saw the photographers and had other ideas. "I wanted to spray the champagne at the camera guys," he said. "But I slipped on the track and threw my back out."

Tigers swing changes

In my humble opinion the jury is still out on the well documented swing changes of Tiger Woods over the last 2 years under the watchful eye of one Hank Haney.

Even though he won over $10 million and 2 majors i believe he is not the ball striker he was in 2000. Just look at the stats for 2005 http://pgatour.com/players/stats/149765/2005 and then for 2000 http://pgatour.com/players/stats/149765/2000 and pay close attention to driving accuracy and greens in regulation.

So lets take this opportunity to compare swings. The picture on the left was taken at the 2000 masters and the picture on the right was the 2005 accenture matchplay. The newer swing is considerably longer as the picture on the left shows the club not reaching parallel their is much greater coil in the older picture as can be seen by how little his hips have turned.
So simply put Tigers swing today is more complicated and relies more on timing.................but that is only my opinion..
