It was a great day at Augusta today with only 18 players able to break par under near perfect conditions. The course clearly won and the hard greens made it tough for most to get it close. Of the 8 Americans to be under par only Furyk and Mickelson can be taken seriously. Woods hit it very nicely and I'm sure he's thinking he should have gone lower. Still, when you look at the 18 guys ahead of him it's easy to predict that the tiger will make his move tomorrow and atleast be in position to win another major over the weekend. Others I believe to be in the hunt are Americans O'Hair, Cink, and Kelly. As far as furiners go I think Rose is showing promise and I always think the Gooseman can get hot. Immelman could surprise. So there it is, my 8 picks to win the Master's. Mw

LONDON -- Colin Montgomerie's manager stepped in to defuse a potential row on Tuesday after the golfer criticized officials of The Masters for inviting players for "television rights."
Montgomerie, 44, will not be at Augusta National next week for only the second time since 1992. He is ranked 75th in the world; the top 50 are automatically invited to The Masters, the first major of the year.
"Colin completely understands Augusta's right to promote themselves," his manager, Guy Kinnings, told Reuters. "The last thing he would want to do is show disrespect or tell them who they should or should not invite.
"He's done everything he can to be there, including changing his schedule, and he's just very disappointed because he values the tournament so highly. He does, though, feel he makes an important contribution around the world in promoting golf."
Three Asian players ranked below Montgomerie -- India's Jeev Milkha Singh (80th); Thailand's Prayad Marksaeng (93rd); and Liang Wenchong from China (111th) received invitations to compete at Augusta, however.
Augusta chairman Billy Payne said their invitations were made "utilizing the Masters brand," adding that interest in those three countries would heighten.
Montgomerie told reporters Monday in Munich, where he was promoting June's BMW International Open, that that was tantamount to handing out invitations for "TV rights."
"Now, if I were the only person in the country, à la China, I might get in. It is a strange way to make up a field for a major championship -- television rights," Montgomerie said in The Independent (London) newspaper. "They are quite open about why. They were when I missed out last time in 2005 when they picked Shingo Katayama who was 67th in the world and I was 51st. They picked him over me for the Japanese rights. And they have done the same with Thailand and China this time.
"I am not the only one who feels that way and not just because I am not in. In or not I'd be saying the same thing. It is a strange criterion to pick a major field."

I'm not sure which way she swings but i think she's a wrighty! Paula Creamer just won for the 5th time this past weekend. She did it in fine fashion and it was clearly the best tournament of the weekend. Hell, she might even make my top ten list of babes on the Lady's tour! You gotta love that bubble butt! Her swing is clearly flawed but who cares she knows how to win with flare and she wears pink, i think...Frankly i love the other white meat on that tour...She could overtake the little mexican if she can win at the Nabisco so i'm predicting she does just that. John Daly passed on Q-School this year and why not? His fan popularity on tour is well documented wright? Daly knew he could use his popularity and long driving prowess to ask for and receive multiple sponsor exemptions. John Daly has no PGA tour card but these special exemptions, if he played well, could get him back on tour. Because of his major wins and tour status he could probably play in 20 or so tour events and he's always welcome overseas. So why play by the same rules when the tour is only interested in "the almighty dollar". wright? Well not so fast. Lets take a look at the record so far.

Daly has played in the last five events making only two cuts! In the two events in which he made the cut he finished dead last...His 2008 earnings in the five events is a whopping $21 grand. But he's a fun guy wright? Here in Palm Springs, home of the hope, Daly partied with the best of them and was reported to have been chasing the fillies in the evenings. There are no race tracks down here. His Pro-am partners had fun tho, wright? Well not exactly. After a late nite on the town Daly withdrew from the tournament claiming a bad wrist. One can only speculate how he was injured. One thing is certain it wasn't from lifting a few dozen or so Bud Lites. His Pro-Am buddies forked over nearly $100,000 to play with this phenom only to end up playing the final rounds with a caddie master who is,, in my view, a better player anyway.

Daly came to the tour after a brief stint on the Nike Tour and shocked the world by winning, in stunning fashion, his first of two major victories at the PGA Championship. He followed that up with a great win at the Open and who can forget that great bunker shot to save par and win at the Buick. He recently sought out Butch Harmon to get his game back in shape. Harmon did make it clear that John needs to get in better shape in order to compete but did John hear him? Evidently not! We would all like to see John succeed but it may take a trip to rehab to get the job done. The tour has plenty of great young players who would love some of those special exempt spots and until Daly gets serious about his life maybe they should let the young guns have a go at it.

He has all the tools to succeed but time is running out on the former star. Get it together John, we're all rooting for you. In the meantime keep you wives and girlfriends locked up when Daly comes to town. This John is not for you...Mw

In 1995 Greg Norman was the best player in the world. Norman won 20 times and finished 2d 31 times. He had 128 friggin top 10's. He would earn $1.6Mln in prize money 13 years ago as "King of the World" (His career earnings were just under $14Mln
but he did make something like $50Mln with his equity in Cobra Golf, later sold to Fortune Brands, owner of Titlest) After 4 events this year Phil Mickleson has made nearly $2 Million! Does anyone care that Phil won this event? Phil always plays great on the west coast in part, this observer thinks, so that he can quit in August
and go on vacation. Who cares wright?

Well, as a fan i care, and i think golf may have peaked, in this country anyway, and the tour should look overseas for future growth. The opening event each year features only winners from the previous season. I remember looking forward to the event at La Costa but no more. Many of the top players shun the tournament along with the tour championship at season's end. This is just unacceptable in my view but who cares wright? The almighty buck rules. So Tiger plays 15 events on the PGA Tour and the sponsors of premier events get screwed. As a contrarian thinker i would bet this will become a problem for the tour in future years. Someone needs to point this out to both sponsors and tour management. I'd bet viewership is down this year...Mw

Paula Creamer was caught red handed playing two spots in Hawaii. In the 2d round she is tied for 23d and leading. Officials were looking into the situation but no ruling is forthcoming. One official quipped " we finally have two babes in contention and who cares if it really is the same babe. I'm confused..Last year Phil Mickleson was also nailed while trying to enter as another player wearing ridiculous horn rimmed glasses and false teeth. That didn't work either..
