I captured both these photos , the one on the left is from a 2000 practice round at la costa before the matchplay during Butch Harmons tutoring and on the right is a practice round at the same event in 2006 when Tiger was under Hank Haney there is a very clear difference in both swings especially in the modern swing which has tremendous arm rotation for the shaft to be in that position which in turn needs tremendous rotation on the forward swing just to get the clubhead square , this might work for someone who swings the club slow like Mark O'Meara but not for someone with the speed of Tiger Woods.........just my opinion

Counterfeit Golf Retailer Jailed

Today, while reading the business headlines on yahoo.com, I noticed a press release from the United States Golf Manufacturers Anit-Counterfeiting Working Group, which stated that a golf retailer in Shanghai had been convicted of selling counterfeit golf equipment.

According to the press release, the retailer, who's name is interestingly Xie Fu Ping, "was sentenced to 1 year's imprisonment (suspended for 1 year) and ordered to pay a fine. The criminal conviction followed enforcement conducted by the Chinese authorities in August 2005 when the police raided Xie's store and seized counterfeit golf inventory valued at US$57,682."

I am glad that the foreign authorities are cracking down on counterfeit clubs.

Also, for those interested, "The U.S. Golf Manufacturers Anti-Counterfeiting Working Group consists of the world's leading golf equipment manufacturers. Its members and brands include Acushnet Company - Titleist, FootJoy and Cobra Golf; Callaway Golf - Odyssey, Top-Flite and Ben Hogan; Cleveland Golf-Never Compromise; Nike; PING; and TaylorMade-adidas Golf - Maxfli."

Charlie Hoffman is one of the good guys now on tour and has plenty of game to win on tour. At 30 Charlie has fought his way to the top spot through the nationwide tour finishing 19th last year. He bombs it and has a good all around game. A few years ago at Q-School one of JacknCoke Jeff's students was paired with Charlie in the 2d stage at Oak Valley. We walked along with the 2sum and had a great time listening to Charlie and his trials along the way. His titlest clubs were stolen the previous nite and the company made sure Charlie had clubs to play with the next day.
He played well and went on to the finals but missed the big tour by a few shots. Two years later he's at the big show and has moved up nicely on the money list to 84th this week. Today he shot 5 under, go get'em Charlie! MW

While Davis Love appears to have put some weight on,Tom Lehman is skinny as a rail but each in their own way has brought their game up a notch. Korean born Seon-Hwa Lee is quite a young lady at the ripe old age of 20yrs. In 2000 she became the youngest player ever to turn professional at the age of 14. The very next year she won on the Korean Ladies Professional Golf Tour! Again a milestone and
like many other pros from this part of the world, she credits her family for showing
her the way to success in the golf world. She has 3 international wins to her resume
and is well on her way this week in Hawaii. After 10 holes she's made just one par
and is 5 under for the day! You do the math...She earned her way on to the tour by
winning the money title on the futures tour and now lives in Florida but describes herself as an "International Player", I guess so. She could easily contend for rookie

In a surprise decision the LPGA (Ladies Professional GoLF Association) has ruled that all Korean players are allowed only 3 letters in their last name. Others will
be disqualified in future events. Gracie Parks said earlier in the day that she supports the idea and has changed her name to Par in hopes that she can someday make

Michele Wei shown here raising her hand apparently requesting a pee break has yet to enter the lpga opener at Turtle Bay on Oahu. Excuse me? This is like a home course for Wei and she finished tied for 2d last year. Ah yes, Turtle Bay built by the great Del Webb in the early 70's sports a fine Arnold Palmer track with beautiful views of the Pacific Ocean and lots of wind that can make play very difficult. I first visited this resort in 1972 and again in 1974,1978, and 1985. Each time with a different wife! It was the best of times and the worst of times but remains one of my favorite spots worldwide. Why oh Wei would Michelle not be there. Rumors circulating on the web of her relationship with a PGA touring pro were denied by sources close to Wei and there are no signs of a reported surprise package on the way but still one has to wonder? Come on Wei, put it together and give the locals something to cheer. Hell, even Patty Sheehan will be there and now we've leaned that
baby cakes Pressel has entered. Is Michelle afraid of baby fat? Apparently so but sad

What a feeling this must be .... i can only imagine as i sit here typing , 23 years old and a winner on tour in his 4th attempt.
Looks like the world is his oyster and the desert golfer predicts he will rise above them all and sooner than later i believe he will take over Tigers mantle , and Tiger i predict will have a very mediocre year for him even though he has won his first two events of the year. He is clearly struggling in the ball striking department and is far from the dominant stats he enjoyed in 2000 as can be seen from a previous post. I know it sounds crazy , but watch what happens very shortly , he is going to start struggling especially at the L.A. open where the rough is supposed to be very high this year , and his swing coach Hank Haney will be sent packing........ p.s. tiger hit only 8 of 18 greens on sunday in his play off win.

SuperBowl 40' 6 for the Steelers....

Well here it is direct from the desk of Mr Wright the analysis of how this game will be played out. Pittsburg is entering their 6th SuperBowl tying Dallas for the most championship apperances. Only San Francisco has won all 5 of their SuperBowls but if
they get there again it will be 6. 6 is my lucky number and over the last 10 years a
team appearing in there first SuperBowl has won 6 times. 666 is the symbol for the devil and Bill Cower looks like the devil. 6 out of every 7 people i have spoken with like the Steelers. I have drunk 6 cups of coffee this morning and will have thrown back a 6 pack of the silver bulltet by kickoff. Tomorrow is the 6th of February and the newpapers on this day will have the following headline. Pittsburg by 10! There is no way Seattle can stay with these guys..Steelers 21 Shehawks 10.....

John Holmes began his golfing career at the age of 9 playing on his high school golf team. "Yeah that gets alot of people" Holmes quipped. " I lettered for 10 years"! Holmes bombs it, averaging 317yds in 3 tournaments this year but credits his good play to his mostly self taught philosophy. "I just went out there with my buddy and
played 54 holes a day till I learned how to get it into the hole" If only i'd have
thought of that! (MW). At the Q" he shot 6 rounds in the sixties and that will usually do the trick but what is more interesting is his own view of the golf swing.
" I'm an idiot when it comes to the golf swing" says Holmes. He's a player in my view
and has the cajones to prove it..MW

I got my new Q Link at the PGA Golf show last week in Orlando after the pretty young sales girl assured me i could stay up all night drinking, have 3 hours sleep and be as fresh as a daisy the next morning..... i kid you not , this is how her and all her fellow reps were selling the product.

So i bought it with great excitement and i was'nt alone as this was one of the busiest booths at the show , 6 days later i,m ready to check into rehab and my putting is terrible however i remain hopeful that this hot little item will bring me fame wealth and glory and not sclerosis of the liver.

Once again this week my favorite rising star Jay Glover is showing he has the stuff to compete on tour. In his first 4 starts this year he has already managed 3 top 10's
and is well on his way to a 4th with a respectable 67 in Phoenix today. The five year pro has shown great patience so far this year hitting it straight and long not
unlike john holmes..aka jb (bd) holmes or whatever! Anyway i fully expect Little Luke
to break through with another couples of wins this year atleast! On a sad note Luke's
long time life partner and caddy Buffalo Bob died today while visiting disneyland in
Orlando. Wow! We were just there too..MW

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates -- Scottish golfer Colin Montgomerie has reached a multi-million-pound out-of-court divorce settlement with his former wife.
Montgomerie's agent confirmed the settlement Thursday, but declined to say how much the golfer's former wife, Eimear, would receive.
Several British newspapers on Friday put the figure at 15 million pounds ($26 million). Others had it at 8 million pounds ($14.2 million).
"Any speculation on the amount is purely that -- speculation," Montgomerie's agent, Guy Kinnings, said. "All the parties involved are pleased they have reached a settlement and can now move on."

Montgomery declined to comment on the settlement Thursday after shooting a 2-over-par 74 in the first round of the Dubai Desert Classic.
Asked Wednesday about the settlement, he said, "I can't give an opinion. But I am here and you see that I'm OK and you can see how I am."
Montgomery and his wife divorced in September 2004 after 14 years of marriage. Eimear blamed Montgomerie's "obsession" with golf as a partial reason for ending the marriage.
Montgomerie, 42, has led the European money list in eight seasons, including last year. In 2005, he won $3.4 million on the European tour, excluding income from endorsements and sponsorship.

O'Grady carries the bag but dreams of swinging the clubs+

PALM DESERT, California - Walking up the fairway at the
$5 million Bob Hope Chrysler Classic with a bag on his
shoulder, Mac O'Grady looks like his mind is wandering further
than his feet.

The thoughts in the professional's head are many and on this
day, none of them are what they should be. O'Grady, who lives in
Palm Springs, is caddying for friend, Lee Brandenburg, who is
one of the pro-am participants in the event.

Given the choice, O'Grady would rather be playing, but after a
long career on the PGA Tour, hasn't been able to gain any
status. His future is not carrying a bag.

"He's (Brandenburg) looking at me, and I'm thinking, 'I would
have fired my caddie.'" O'Grady said. "There were two or three
times where the clubs weren't clean, I'm dropping the towel, I'm
talking to other people. I'm not taking care of Lee. But it
doesn't matter, I'm not getting paid."

O'Grady was a staple on the PGA Tour in the 70s and 80s and
while he won twice, was known for his eccentric behavior and
public feud with then commissioner, Deane Beman, who he called
"a thief with a capital T."

There were two name changes, his real name is Phil McGleno but
he changed it to Phillip McClelland O'Grady then to Mac O'Grady.
The reason was simple in O'Grady's mind, saying everyone knew
he had multiple personalities.

Three years ago O'Grady tried to qualify for the B.C. Open under
the name Mac O'Grady II and was going to do it left handed.
Again it seemed logical to O'Grady. He wanted to play with Mac
O'Grady I, who could get in as a past champion. O'Grady played
as a right hander, but wanted to enter under the second name as
a left hander. The tour informed him he would have to choose one
of his personalities and he stuck with the right handed
version.

This eccentricity would be perfect for the Champions Tour, where
entertainment is desperately needed, but O'Grady wants no part
of it.

"The guys on the senior tour, you know, God bless them, but they
are looking forward to two or three things," O'Grady said. "One
is they are mad because they aren't playing the regular tour
anymore. Two, they know they are going to have to go back into
the bosom of the earth forever. And three they can't take their
money with them."

Life has always been a little irreverent for O'Grady, but his
desire to try and play on the regular tour is real. He turns 55
in April, but says he is in the best shape of his life.

"I missed Monday qualifying for the Sony by a shot," O'Grady
said. "I am going to try again next week at Buick."

It is a desire that doesn't appear to be leaving anytime soon
and though it may sound crazy, consider the source.

"I'd rather go run with the kids Monday qualifying for the next
10 years," O'Grady said. "You know why? Because the dream is
still real."

What can i say..The PGA show was a terrific success!!!
Pictured above is Claude Harmon who was indicted into
the Teachers Hall of Fame. The photo taken circa 1954
is a stiking resemblance to Peeheed. Ofcourse Peeheed
and myself were invited to the gala affair and we both
threw back plenty of "comp" cocktails. Our entire exhibitor
group was in attendance as we celebrated the life of a great
contributor to golf. Our exhibit was among the most visited
along with Q-Link. A snake oil necklace that claims to be better
than viagra! Peeheed and I both walked away with a necklace and
i can tell you it works! More later on the show but safe to say
we sold a hell of alot of video teaching systems and had the plesure
of meeting the Harmon's, Chuck Cook, Jim McClain, and many other very
formidable pga teaching pros all very pleased with our product..MW

Jacks Last Putt at the British

In 1972 my parents took me to Muirfield to watch the British Open. I was 11 years old and had hit my 1st golf shot a month earlier on a soccer pitch beside our home . Its hard to describe the excitement i felt as i walked through the gates of The Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers and witnessed my 1st of many 'Opens'.
As i made my way past the clubhouse and the grandstands by the 18th green with my father in tow i suddenly saw this great big blond haired man walking to the practise putting green, little did i know he had already won the Masters and the US Open earlier in the year and was marching confidently towads history and the illusive grand slam.
I followed him all four rounds but alas he was pipped by a stroke by Lee Trevino and the impossible slam would stay safe once again.
But since that moment 33 1/2 years ago when he almost tripped over me , he has been an incredible role model and someone i have looked upto so often, the way he handled himself on and off the course throughout his career is something others should attempt to immulate, as it is awful to watch the behavior of some very high paid athletes.
So the moment the above picture was taken i can assure you i was shedding a tear or two.
I promise you Jack Nicklaus will be missed by this fan...

and that can certainly be seen here from Jim Furyk , the precious swing plane millions of golfers spend countless hours and unknown amounts of money trying to perfect is clearly not that important to this great player. What is important is the IMPACT ZONE which creates the trajectory.
Lee Trevino never had a lesson nor saw his swing on video but he hit thousands maybe millions of balls focusing only on trajectory and he became one of golfs greatest ball stikers.

Jim Furyk could be close to this catagory also including the fact he is a fearsome competitor with a great shortgame all adds up in my opinion to him having a wonderful season and being the best in the game at the end of it........

Today at the HOPE my two top picks Lucas Glover and Phil Mickelson both shot 66 but I must say Phil got his on what has always been the toughest in the HOPE rotation and my personal favorite course. LaQuinta CC. There won't be many rounds shot lower than that of today in our view. The course is beautiful, tight, and old like many of the members there. On a sad note the clubhouse litterally broke in half this past earthquake season and is closed and scheduled for a $40mln renovation. Good luck to all the fine members at LaQuinta. The town itself is famous only for the 30 DUI's the
cops wright there each and every nite.

It was a picture perfect day here in the valley with 76 degree temps and little wind to dampen the fun. The biggest question on the minds of most fans was..."Where in the hell is the Goodyear blimp! There I said it and it's about time we take this issue seriously. Peeheed just showed up for a little smallball so i'm out..MW

Bob Hope holes in one at 90 years old

Back in december 1993 i worked at the fabled Canyon South g.c. in Palm Springs , this happened to be Bob Hopes favourite course , a place he frequented often simply because it was near his house and no one would bother him whilst there . Each time he arrived he would pull into the parking lot , get in a cart with his driver (the kind that starts the car and stops at red lights) and off they'd go for a quick 9 holes.

On this particular afternoon Bob would ace the 8th hole , a 150 yarder using a driver (the callaway kind) he nailed the tee shot then watched as it skipped across the pond , up and over a bank onto the green and finally into the cup. After playing he excitedly shared his joy with the assistant starter the legendary" jack n' coke Jeff" then trundled accross the street to the Canyon C.C. for his usual 2 brandy alexanders.
"Jack n' coke Jeff" felt compelled to call the Desert Sun newspaper and share the moment , and they graciously put an article on the front page of their sports section to Honor a great moment for Palm Springs most famous golfer........

Phil Mickelson shown above is the odds on favorite to win his third hope classic. It seems he wins every other year here. Unlike Hawaii he will be playing left handed this time out and if his putter is hot he should win again.

My personal longshots include Sean O'hairy, Michelle Allan, Lucas Glover (no relation
to Jay Glover), and my favorite Swinger Jeff Maggot. Ofcourse anyone can win this pitch and putt but don't be surprised to see a winner from this group of five.

David out there where you just can't square up the clubface. All one has to do is check out his stats to see how wild he's become. We're going out to the range to see him hit balls and hopefully this time he'll listen..I liked him better when he was fat! MW

DUVALS DIFFERENT SWINGS

The swing frames at the top were filmed at Doral in 2004 and below was 2000.
You can click on either to enlarge it. The 2004 pictures clearly show the shaft going much further back at the end of the backswing than the frames from 2000 so the swing had for sure changed and i believe got more complicated and when ones confidence suddenly disappears the consistency becomes much harder. The answer to me elimenate the reverse pivot on his newer swing and he will be back to where he was in 2000. Although he did shoot 63 last week in Hawaii so maybe he has..??

poor swing meets great player....is there HOPE?

The great wall street guru Warren Buffett has often quipped, "when a great company meets poor management the company's reputation usually loses". the same can be said for a poor golf swing teaming up with a great player and this appears to be exactly what happened to David Duval!

BUT! on a crisp sunday morning in 1999 the trashman had invited Peeheed and myself to the hope tent for some breakfast and the final round of this desert classic. Peeheed had already knocked back 4 bloody mary's and i had hit on the food and beverage manager (female) when the monitor flashed that Duval had birdied four out of the first 5 holes holes.

Peeheed needed some fresh air so we headed out to check out the action. Duval had just won the Mercedes shooting a sizzling 26 under but was far back after opening with 70-71-64-70. at -13 he was hardly in contention. still it was the "Hope" and anything is possible on these courses plus Duval was on top of his game and would go
on to post 17 top 25's out of 21 tournaments played in '99 and would win 4 times including the Player's considered by many as a 5th major.

Steve pate was on fire and would shoot a terrific 61 on this sunday. surely enough
to win until Duval hit that magic 5 iron to 20 feet on the final hole and made eagle
to be the first ever to shoot 59 on sunday and win the damn tournament. it was a thrill to watch.

Pate would spend the next 5 years at Q-school and Duval would win only two more tournaments including his only major "the open". What the hell happened? at the end of 1999 Duval was "king of the world" but it wouldn't last. in my humble opinion his poor swing fundamentals finally won out even though he was a great player and number 1 for some time during this stretch.

Tomorrow the "HOPE CLASSIC" begins play and the birds will fly. there is one new course slated to be the home of the hope classic which was built just a few miles east of one of the largest windmill farms in the world. during practice rounds they
had winds up to 50MPH so maybe the scoring will prove difficult on 1 of the 4 tracks.

On the 18th hole of the palmer course there lies a stone in the ground where Duval hit his final approach shot in 1999. i've had the opportunity to play this course a few times since history was made and i still get gooesey bumps as i hit my 3 wood in
to the green from that very spot. i've never even hit the green from that point but
it's always fun to try. we'll be out there on Sunday and hopefully so will David. it's not like he's Ian Baker Flinch or anything. good luck David. maybe Peeheed will be so kind as to analize the Duval swing for us. i'm out..MW

Singh's putting woes

It's frightening to think how many more wins Vijay Singh would have if he were even slightly better than average with the putter. Sometimes watching him putt is like watching Shaquille O'Neal shoot a free throw. Singh's 50 career wins worldwide, including one here last year over Ernie Els, is a testament to just how good the rest of his game is. And if it wasn't for a missed 9-footer for birdie on the first playoff hole at the Mercedes, we would likely be talking about win No. 51 -- yesterday i turned on the TV late in the final round just as they showed VJ miss one from 18 inches on his final hole , yet he still managed to finish 5th, is he destined to become the next Ben Hogan, a superlative ball striker who eventually has great difficulty even drawing the putter back..

this just in... Phil Mickelson disquised in black hornrimmed glasses, false teeth and dyed black hair playing wright handed shot 63 today but was disqualified when officials discovered he had used the name of shane bertsch to enter the wie sony open. phil said he needed the money after losing to peeheed in a million dollar matchplay event on tuesday at cathedral canyon country club. the golf world was shocked to hear of this after phil and tiger had both decided not to play in the event. in an unrelated story michelle wie was said to be near death after a suicide attempt apparently after a self endouched abortion attempt. there was no comment from the apparent boyfriend/father to be ernie els. more later on this breaking news..MW

ALMOST A GOOD TAKEAWAY

Mr.Wright demonstarting good clubhead position on his takeaway,which is certainly a key to good mechanics , however as his arms , hands and club move away from the ball his chest or sternum does not move in unison with them therefore a slight disconnection occurs.
The cure simply is focusing on the sternum and butt of club starting back together.
